Your Post-Summer Pigmentation Plan
One of the most complained-about signs of premature ageing is hyperpigmentation. Particularly common in Australia thanks to our high levels of UV radiation, it’s a skin concern that affects around 80% of my patients and has inspired a number of my formulations for at-home care.
My two-part treatment plan will help you target unwanted hyperpigmentation and visibly correct your skin tone and natural radiance.
PART ONE: EXFOLIATION
The first step to treating uneven skin tone and patches of hyperpigmentation is to stimulate new skin cell production and refine the surface layers of the skin.
Hyperpigmentation is essentially increased and excess pigment. Known as melanin, this pigment is produced by cells known as melanocytes. When those cells go into overdrive, the excess melanin ends up clumping together to form blotchy patches of freckles, sun spots, age spots and melasma.
As we move into Autumn, it’s the perfect time to address the unwanted pigmentation that often starts to reveal itself at the end of Summer.
Why Exfoliation Helps Hyperpigmentation
Removing tired, dull skin cells will lift out unwanted pigment. Exfoliation will not only lift off those expired skin cells that leave skin looking dull and mottled but will also help to stimulate your skin’s natural cellular renewal to bring fresh new cells to the surface.
As many of you know, I’m not a fan of physical exfoliants; they disrupt the important epidermal barrier function, leading to sensitivity and ageing of the skin. In addition, they’re actually pretty ordinary at exfoliation. Instead, I prefer clever formulations containing exfoliating actives like AHAs and BHAs which efficiently dissolve the glue that keeps those old skin cells together and blocks the production of fresh, young skin cells.
Your At-Home Prescription
Concentrated Clarifier
For daily exfoliation, our Concentrated Clarifier is powered by 18% AHAs and BHAs. It’s a powerful , daily cell-renewing serum applied after cleansing and before moisturiser that eliminates the old and encourages new skin cells while stimulating the production of Collagen and Elastin.
Concentrated Micropeel
For a more intensive exfoliation, a gentle at-home chemical peel used as a weekly skin-refining treatment can be an effective step to work into your skincare routine. Our Concentrated Micropeel contains 25% AHAs and BHAs to mimic the results of an in-clinic chemical peel without the down time. It works to clarify skin tone and texture by lifting pigmentation and sun spots. Added bonus: Concentrated Micropeel will improve Collagen and Elastin over time (with diligent use) even, resulting in radiant, youthful skin.
